"Dosa" is a traditional South Indian food item. Somewhat similar to crêpes, dosas are made from rice batter and are high in carbohydrates and proteins. Typically eaten with a side item, dosas can be stuffed with vegetables, meats and sauces to prepare a quick meal. Common side items include Sambar (cereals cooked in a spicy sauce), Chutney (ground coconut laced with green chillies) and Indian pickle. Those with wheat allergies or gluten intolerance will find the dosa a nice addition to their diets.
Considered a breakfast dish, dosas can also be eaten at other times of day, though in larger numbers (3 - 4 pieces would be just right for lunch or dinner).
Dosas trace their origin to South India and have by now come into the mainstream in most parts of India. And, thanks to the large Indian diaspora spread all over the world, dosas are gaining increasing visibility outside India, especially in countries like the UK, Gulf, Singapore, Malaysia and the USA.
